“KEEPERS OF HERITAGE – Seven Centuries of Visoki Dečani Monastery”

  • by

Seven centuries. One place. A heritage that endures.
How can the story of a place be told when it encompasses centuries of faith, art, history and human experience?

The multimedia project “Keepers of Heritage – Seven Centuries of Visoki Dečani Monastery”, explores the spiritual, cultural and historical heritage of Visoki Dečani Monastery. Presented throughout 2027 to mark the monastery’s seven-century anniversary, the project brings together an exhibition of photographs by Dalibor Danilović, archival material from the monastery, video material and a program of accompanying activities.

Through contemporary photography, historical records and original archival material, the project offers new perspectives on the heritage of Visoki Dečani and makes it accessible to a wider audience and to different generations. It seeks to encourage a deeper understanding of the site and of the importance of preserving its heritage for the future.

Three Perspectives on Seven Centuries

The exhibition is organized around three thematic areas: frescoes, architecture and life within the monastery complex. Approximately 4,000 m² of authentic medieval frescoes, an architectural complex that has retained its essential form over the centuries, a rich treasury and the uninterrupted continuity of monastic life together reflect the depth, complexity and diversity of the heritage preserved at Visoki Dečani.

More Than a Monument

Visoki Dečani forms part of the UNESCO-listed “Medieval Monuments in Kosovo” and represents an exceptional encounter between different artistic and architectural traditions. Byzantine and Western European influences meet in the monastery’s architecture and art, forming a distinctive cultural whole and reflecting the centuries-long exchange between traditions that have shaped the European cultural landscape. The project therefore looks beyond the historical significance of the monastery. It also invites reflection on questions that remain relevant today:

How do we preserve the heritage we have inherited?
How do we make it accessible and meaningful to future generations?
And what will we pass on?

Engaging New Generations

A particular focus of the project is engaging young people with cultural heritage. Through workshops, public discussions and other educational programs, the project seeks to present heritage in ways that encourage curiosity, participation and a deeper understanding of the past and its relevance to the present. Because heritage is not only what we preserve. It is also the knowledge we pass on, the stories we continue to tell and the responsibility we carry forward.

A Journey Across Serbia

Throughout 2027, the exhibition and accompanying programs will be presented in Belgrade, Smederevo and other cities across Serbia. The aim is to bring the heritage of Visoki Dečani to a broad and diverse audience, to those already familiar with the monastery, as well as to those encountering its history, art and living tradition for the first time.

Seven centuries are not only a reason to look back. They are an opportunity to reflect on what we have inherited, what we preserve today, and what we will pass on. We preserve what we have inherited. And we find ways to pass it on.
