A Meeting That Opens New Doors

  • by

Some new connections happen spontaneously, while others open the door to future collaboration. One such connection began at Janko Jovićević Primary School in Goraždevac.

During their visit to the Visoki Decani Monastery, representatives of the “Keepers of Heritage—A Step Through Time” Association, Aleksandra Kožul, President of the Association, and Marija Stepanović Dinić, Project Coordinator, visited the school and met with Principal Milan Anđelković and School Counsellor Aleksandra Petrović Todorović. They spoke about the school and its work, the students, and opportunities for future cooperation.

The conversation also brought forward some concrete ideas for the coming period. It was agreed that the cooperation would continue through joint activities, with one of the first being a planned visit by students from Goraždevac to Smederevo next year.

“We wanted to connect with the children from Goraždevac and use this meeting as an opportunity to spend time together and exchange experiences. We are looking forward to welcoming them to Smederevo. We believe it will be a lovely opportunity to spend time together, discover a new part of Serbia, and create some special memories,” said Aleksandra Kožul, president of the association. She added that they were especially happy to wish the students a successful start to the new school year on behalf of all members of the Association.

“We also prepared a few small gifts for them as a gesture of attention and with the wish that the year ahead brings them plenty of learning, friendship, and happy moments,” Aleksandra added.

“The most beautiful part of this meeting was the openness of the children and the warm welcome they gave us. Moments like these remind us that what we do is about much more than preserving records of the past. It is important to us to use heritage as a way to connect people, especially young people, and to create space for new stories together,” said Marija Stepanović Dinić, Project Coordinator.

“For us, heritage is not only what has been left behind. It lives through people, their stories, encounters, and experiences that we carry forward. That is why we are leaving Goraždevac with a new idea and with the joy of knowing that there are more encounters still to come.”

A step through time sometimes begins with a single meeting.
